Digestive Diseases & Thoracics (Ward C32)

Students would join the General (abdominal) Surgery team for a week and be a part of the day to day life of the junior doctors. Applicants will take part in the daily activities of the surgical team and be a part of the surgical ward round, emergency admissions and theatres as well as watch a variety of interventions including endoscopy and surgery, mainly relating to surgical conditions involving the Gall Bladder, Liver and Pancreas and Acute Surgical Emergencies.

Please note that this placement is not a specific training or teaching placement but a real taste of what life is like on a surgical unit.

No placements available in August due to junior doctors’ changeover.

Applicants are encouraged to be vaccinated against Covid-19.

You will be required to attend an induction session before your placement, we will book you onto a session in line with your placement start date.

Nottingham City Hospital


On the first day of the placement please report at 8am to the placement supervisor on Ward C32, C Floor, East Block, Queen's Medical Centre, Derby Road. If you have any problems on the day please speak to Jessica, Waiting List Co-ordinator, Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Office, West Block, E Floor, opposite E15 . Tel. 0115 9249924 Ext 81019.

At some point during the placement please could you go to see Jessica Wyer so that he knows that you are on the placement. Jessica is in Ian Beckingham's office next to Ward E15 on E Floor West Block. If you follow signs towards the ward the office is just a bit further down the corridor. Jessica will need to confirm your attendance. If you require confirmation of attendance you need to ask Jessica when you are on placement and collect this on the last day before you leave from Jessica. The department will not provide
confirmation of attendance once a student has left the department. Please find attached further information about the Unit.

Please bring one of the following documents, or a photocopy, as
evidence of your date of birth; passport/driving licence/ birth
certificate to the work experience induction so that a permit can be
given to you to allow you to visit Theatres should the opportunity be given. Work experience students won't be allowed into Theatres without a permit. Please find attached further information on Theatres.

This placement is only suitable for those applicants wishing to follow a career as a doctor. They should have evidence of likely attainment of the requisite academic ability to apply for medical school. No placements available in August due to junior doctors’ changeover.

Due to the demand for work experience placements, all work experience applicants must be Nottinghamshire residents or attend full-time education in Nottinghamshire. Applicants must attend an induction before they can attend the placement.

If you are successful, we can only co-ordinate one placement per person, per academic year, through the directory of placements. This is due to the demand for placements.
