Placement experience is age dependent due to hospital policy. Students aged 18 and over will be able to gain 3 days’ experience and will be expected to work a variety of daytime shift patterns. The placement consists of one day (7am-7pm) on labour suite, one day (7am-7pm) on the ward in which they will attend a section in theatre (when available) and one day (9am-5pm) in community. However, 17 year olds will work a maximum of 7.5 hours per day so cannot work shifts.

Students aged 17 will be able to gain 3 days’ experience and will be expected to work a variety of daytime shift patterns. The placement consists of one day (7am-7pm) on labour suite, one day (7am-7pm) on the ward and one day (9am-5pm) in community.

The programme also includes an objectives’ booklet for completion by the student for their records and a certificate of attendance upon full completion of the experience. The shifts may include Saturday and Sunday.

Applications are reviewed on a quarterly basis as follows: March, June, September and December.

All observations are subject to patients' consent and the Trust's Safeguarding policies. Please note that if there are no mothers in labour on the day of the placement it cannot be guaranteed that applicants will observe a live birth. If there are nursing or medical students on placement at the same time then they will be given priority in order to meet their placement objectives.

You will be required to attend an induction session before your placement, we will book you onto a session in line with your placement start date.

To be confirmed one week before placement. The exact days will be confirmed at a later date when the shifts are allocated but may include Saturday and Sunday so please keep these days free. Hours will be 2 days in the hospital 7am-7pm and one day with the community midwives 9am-5pm. However, 17 year olds will work a maximum of 7.5 hours per day so cannot work shifts.

Smart dress. Flat comfortable shoes. Bare below the elbows. Long hair tied back and only one set of stud earrings, no other jewellery.


For students who are second year A level students or older, with a genuine interest in applying for their midwifery training.

Please note that under 18’s are not allowed to go to theatre.
