This placement opportunity is a chance to experience acute inpatient care within Nottingham Children’s Hospital. Student’s will be able to observe inpatient care across a variety of specialities. Specific learning opportunities will include:
• Observe a Registered Nurse working on the ward
• See patient assessment, gain a basic understanding of why we do observations
• Watch a procedure take place on the ward eg: A cannula being inserted, Blood being taken, Intravenous drugs being administered, A plaster cast being removed, A feed being given via a nasogastric or gastrostomy tube, observe how nurses draw up medications and administer them to patients, Join the ward round to see how the multidisciplinary team work together to coordinate patient care

• Spend some time with the ward play specialist to see how important their role is, if you can watch them do some distraction during a procedure to get a better understanding.

• Go to our youth room

• Have a talk to the teachers from the hospital school to find out more about their role.

• Work with our Care Support Workers, Training Nursing Associates and House Keepers – the wards only function as we work together as a team to ensure our patients get the best care.

Please Note - The minimum age is 18 for this placement due to the observation of paediatric patients. We can accept 17 year olds in their last year of education however they will be limited to placement areas.



Nottingham City Hospital


You will be allocated to a ward area for your placement. When you arrive you will be expected to report to the nurse in charge who will allocate you a nurse to work with for the shift. The details of the ward manager and contact details will be sent to you in advance when your placement area is agreed.

Due to the role being patient facing smart, professional clothes with no trainers are required. Long hair needs to be tied up and bare below of the elbows. Any piercings will need to be a stud, no hoops will be tolerated. No false nails, nail polish.
