Students will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of the principles of research and the difference between qualitative and quantitative studies. There will be the opportunity to undertake an activity that underpins the legal aspects of patient safety and patient choice.
Students will be able to observe research activities such as how we collect data and the different types of data in relation to the research question. There will be the opportunity to observe research team members in clinical practice and patient contact i.e. observing recording of vital signs, chest drain insertion, venepuncture and ECG recordings. Students will also witness the process of informing/ educating the patient on the research trial and the process of informed written consent. Students will be shown the importance of safe keeping of documents and the filing procedure that ensures information governance is maintained and managed within the department.
The research team work within a large area of the Trust and cover many disciplines i.e. Oncology, Surgery, Respiratory, Cardiology, Strokes, Paediatrics and Reproductive Health & Childbirth. There will be the opportunity of exposure to these areas with members of the research team.
We also encourage students to attend insights visits to other departments within the Trust subject to availability and accessibility.

The department's working hours are 8 am-5 pm these hours are flexible for students.
Code of dress smart while office-based and uniform for staff and nursing students in clinical areas. Scrubs are available for non-nursing personnel.
