Adult Speech and Language Therapy

The Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) service provides support to adults who have communication and swallowing needs, across a very broad range of acute specialties including Healthcare of the Older Person, Respiratory, and Critical Care. The SLT Service works across both sites, working alongside a separate Ear, Nose and Throat team.

The SLT team work within a number of regional services including the Neurosciences Unit, Major Trauma Centre, a comprehensive Stroke Unit, Trent Cardiac Centre, Burns Unit and Upper GI services. There are also SLTs within the Neuro-rehabilitation Unit, the MDT Neuro-rehabilitation Outpatient Services, and an SLT service for Neurology Outpatients.

Students must be considering studying SLT at University.

Students will have the opportunity to shadow a therapist in one of our teams. The experience will take place in a clinical environment and students will have the opportunity to observe assessment/ therapy/clinical administrative duties (i.e. record keeping etc).

This placement is for half a day only. Hours 9am-1pm. An afternoon session can be arranged instead if applicants can only attend an afternoon session.

Students may be based at the Queen’ Medical Centre or Nottingham City Hospital campus.
You will be required to attend an induction session before your placement, we will book you onto a session in line with your placement start date.

Nottingham City Hospital


Students need to report at 9am to the Adult Speech and language therapy department reception, D Floor, East Block, QMC unless otherwise stated.
Hours 9am-1pm.

We have some teams at City but we can liaise as and when this happens but the majority will be hosted by QMC.

This placement is only suitable for those applicants wishing to follow a career as a Speech and Language Therapist.

Due to the demand for work experience placements, all work experience applicants must be Nottinghamshire residents or attend full-time education in Nottinghamshire. Applicants must attend an induction before they can attend the placement.

If you are successful, we can only co-ordinate one placement per person, per academic year, through the directory of placements. This is due to the demand for placements.
