Widening Access to Medical School (WAMS) Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (for applicants who are 17+)

Nottingham University Hospitals is committed to widening access to medical school. We aim to encourage applications from under-represented groups including care leavers, pupils from lower socio-economic groups, or attending schools with low progression into higher education and those who are the first generation in their family to consider higher education.

Applicants should be committed to applying to medical school and have the necessary GCSE grades and A Levels/predicted A levels, including sciences, for entry to medical school.

Participants will have the opportunity to see the outpatient environment of a busy surgical department that treats conditions affecting the face, head and neck including but not limited to facial trauma, head and neck cancer, facial deformity and head and neck infections. There is also opportunity to see inpatients under the care of the Oral and Maxillofacial in an acute surgical ward and to see patients presenting to the service acutely in the Emergency Department. Those that wish to can come to the operating theatre to see the full range of surgery that we offer.

Applicants are encouraged to be vaccinated against Covid-19.

Before you apply for a placement we strongly recommend that you complete a Covid-19 age risk assessment at the Covid-19 Medical Risk Assessment at Covid-19 Medical Risk Assessment – Alama. This will calculate your Covid-19 age and let you know how high the risk will be of you becoming infected with Covid-19. Please consider your risk score before applying for a placement. If you are under 20 please submit 20 as your current age. A suggested risk score for Covid-19 age vulnerability is:
85 and over = very high
70-84 = high
50-69 = moderate
Under 50 = low

Successful applicants will be also be invited to attend a session to meet medical students and obtain guidance with applying to medical school. The invite to attend this session will be sent to you via Eventbrite.

Report to the main reception of the Oral and Maxillofacial outpatient department (B floor, West block at the QMC) where they will be taken to the secretaries office

Smart dress. Flat comfortable shoes. Bare below the elbows. Long hair tied back and only one set of stud earrings, no other jewellery.

All work experience applicants will be expected to wear a face mask.


Applicants need to be 17+ to attend Theatres. Applicants should be committed to applying to medical school and have the necessary GCSE grades and A Levels/predicted A levels, including sciences, for entry to medical school.

Due to the demand for work experience placements, all work experience applicants must be Nottinghamshire residents or attend full-time education in Nottinghamshire. Applicants must attend an induction before they can attend the placement.

If you are successful, we can only co-ordinate one placement per person, per academic year, through the directory of placements. This is due to the demand for placements.
