Widening Access to Medical School (WAMS) Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (for applicants who are 16 only)

Nottingham University Hospitals is committed to widening access to medical school. We aim to encourage applications from under-represented groups including care leavers, pupils from lower socio-economic groups, or attending schools with low progression into higher education and those who are the first generation in their family to consider higher education.

Applicants should be committed to applying to medical school and have the necessary GCSE grades/predicted GCSE grades for entry to medical school.

Participants will get to see the outpatient environment of a busy surgical department that treats conditions affecting the face, head and neck including but not limited to facial trauma, head and neck cancer, facial deformity and head and neck infections. There is also opportunity to see inpatients under the care of the Oral and Maxillofacial in an acute surgical ward and to see patients presenting to the service acutely in the Emergency Department.

Successful applicants will be also be invited to attend a session to meet medical students and obtain guidance with applying to medical school. The invite to attend this session will be sent to you via Eventbrite.

Applicants are encouraged to be vaccinated against Covid-19.

To the main reception of the Oral and Maxillofacial outpatient department (B floor, West block at the QMC) where they will be taken to the secretaries office

9am-4pm for outpatients, 8am-4pm for ward rounds


Smart dress. Flat comfortable shoes. Bare below the elbows. Long hair tied back and only one set of stud earrings, no other jewellery.


Applicants can only attend the ward and outpatients.

Due to the demand for work experience placements, all work experience applicants must be Nottinghamshire residents or attend full-time education in Nottinghamshire. Applicants must attend an induction before they can attend the placement.

If you are successful, we can only co-ordinate one placement per person, per academic year, through the directory of placements. This is due to the demand for placements.
